A foreman attached to the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Sugar Estate died tragically after his cousin’s gun accidentally went off Sunday night, shooting him in his back and arm. The incident occurred about 23:15h in the vicinity of BM Soat Auto Sales located at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara as the men were travelling home. The man was identified as Premaul “Romel” Rampersaud, 23, of Lot 62 Triumph, East Coast Demerara. The driver of the car and the cousin are in custody assisting with investigations.
The DPP has since recommended that the suspect be charged with manslaughter.
Police said in a release that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Rampersaud. Investigations so far revealed that at about 23:15h, Rampersaud, his cousin, Seelall Parboo, a licensed firearm holder, and another relative (the driver) were in a car proceeding along the Lusignan Public Road, after leaving a wedding reception.
Parboo, who was in the back seat, was allegedly attempting to clear his firearm, which suddenly went off resulting in a bullet passing through the seat and hitting Rampersaud in his back. Parboo panicked and pulled the trigger again, shooting Rampersaud a second time.
According to information gathered, Rampersaud had left home about 21:00h in the company of a relative to attend a wedding reception in the neighbouring village, Mon Repos, but he later went to another wedding reception in Annandale, ECD where he met his cousin.
When Guyana Times International visited the man’s house, relatives were busy making preparations to host a wake while his mother, Wendy Rampersaud, was sitting in a sofa trying to console herself, but as relatives arrived to give their condolences she broke down in tears.
She said it was about 01:30h when she received a telephone call from one of her son’s friends informing her about the shooting and instructing them to go to the hospital.
“When we reach the hospital, they been done wrap he up in sheets and bin ah tek he to the mortuary,” the woman related. She said that Premaul was her only son and the pride of the family.
The man’s father, who is still in shock, described his now deceased son, who graduated from the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) in 2010, as “a son that anyone would want to get”; “he was pleasant, loving and very intelligent”.
Rampersaud would have celebrated his 24th birthday on November 21. He leaves to mourn his parents and one sister.
