“Wake up and prepare to vote, wake up and vote”, these were the words that greeted residents of Linden at about 04:30h on Election Day. One hour later as Guyana Times International cruised through the streets of Region 10, hundreds of persons were proceeding to their respective polling stations to exercise their democratic right.

Regional Chairman Mortimer Mingo told media operatives that some 116 polling stations were in operation in Region 10 from De Velde in the Berbice River to River’s View in the Essequibo River. According to Mingo, 86 polling stations were set up in Linden with Linden Foundation Secondary School being the largest.

Some 1917 persons are expected to vote at the facility. At the time, the regional chairman was speaking at the Watooka Day Primary School where he casted his vote shortly after 06:00h. In a blissful tone, Mingo said he is elated to see that people are exercising their civic duty. “It shows that people are really interested and want to be part of this process.”

He noted that the people of Guyana have been anxiously waiting for this day where they can make a difference in their lives.

“I feel confident for a victory for the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). We are confident that the hard work that we have put in while conducting our campaign addressing issues that are affecting people and from the response that we are getting, it is clear to us that the people do want to see change.”

Meanwhile, his party affiliate, Linden Mayor and Town Council Interim Management Committee Chairman, Orrin Gordon who voted at the same venue, said he too anticipate a “win” for APNU. He added that from the magnitude of support given at the APNU rallies in Region 10 and across Guyana, he is extremely positive that the coalition will win.

“To be honest with you, things have not been going the way we would have expected it to for the last five years, our community and region have been struggling for a very long time for a series of developmental plans, but we expect significant changes,” posited Gordon.

One resident, Green Marshall of Watooka, emerged from the polling station rejoicing after casting his vote. “At this moment, I am very happy that I played my part and that’s what is important to me.”

At the South Amelia’s Ward Nursery School, some voters said they envisaged major developmental strides for Guyana in the next five years. One woman, who requested anonymity, said she is confident that the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) will do it again for Guyana.

“I see a bright future for Guyana, a lot of things are going to happen for us in the education sector, young people are going to get jobs and great things are going to happen when Donald Ramotar becomes the president of Guyana,” said the optimistic South Amelia’s Ward resident.

While dozens of persons flocked the minor polling stations, more than 300 persons, including the disabled, swarmed the Linden Foundation Secondary School at around 07: 30h to cast their ballots. A group of bus and car drivers was shuttling the elderly, disabled and financially challenged persons to and from the various polling stations across the town.
