Lindeners now accessing learning channel

Residents of Linden are now benefitting from one of government’s most recent educational initiatives, the Guyana Learning Channel.

On Wednesday last, a satellite dish was planted at the Linden branch of National Communications Network for the installation of the educational channel, which now complements two existing channels in the region-channels 8 and 11.

The channel was switched on for the first time in the mining town at around 21: 30h on July 13, but came off periodically the next day to facilitate adjustments to ensure effective broadcast.

Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, while in Linden, said that the establishment of the learning channel is an indication of government’s continued investment in the lives of all Guyanese.

According to the minister, residents of Georgetown and coastal areas have been benefiting from the initiative. ” In fact, today, in Georgetown and many parts of the coastal areas, when they turn on the Guyana Learning Channel, you will be able to see educational programmes across the entire spectrum, for example you have introductory programmes in nursery and primary education,” Singh explained.

Minister Singh noted that the programmes are designed to capture the attention of various audiences at the nursery, primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

“Here you have a medium that delivers interesting and educational content into people’s homes; you don’t have to go to a classroom, you don’t have to go to the university, you get this content for free in your home,” he said.

Boasting of the additional achievements made in the education sector, the minister pointed to the fact that “we have spent literally billions of dollars every year investing in schools, in the construction of schools, making sure that the physical infrastructure is in place, equipping our school, in staffing our school, and in operating the school systems across the country”. Already, the state has accomplished universal primary education which is a millennium target goal.

Additionally, the minister told media operatives that the administration has made tremendous progress in achieving universal secondary education. Guyana, he said, will be building on these achievements when it enters the fully modernised world by embracing emerging technologies.
