Lethem bus driver remanded

– charged with drug trafficking

The bus driver who was early on Sunday morning discovered with a large quantity of cocaine and cannabis while transporting passengers to Lethem was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday, charged with the offence of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Garfield Parker and the quantity of drugs reportedly unearthed from his vehicle


Garfield Parker, 55, who hails from Tabatinga, Lethem, denied the allegation leveled against him.
The charge alleges that he, on October 1, 2017, at the Mabura Police Checkpoint, Linden, was found to be in possession of 24.9 kilograms of cannabis and 200 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The accused, unrepresented by legal counsel, was remanded to prison and will return to the Linden Magistrates’ Court on October 11, 2017.
On the day of the discovery, Parker was attempting to pass through the above mentioned checkpoint at about 04:00hrs when the discovery was made.
His vehicle was thoroughly searched by ranks, who had received a tip, and the drugs were unearthed. As such, he was taken into Police custody, and was later charged.
