Legendary Bob Marley to be honoured at GFW 2011

One thing for sure, Guyana Fashion Weekend (GFW) never fails to surprise us with innovative events. This year, GFW will celebrate the work of Jamaican legendary music icon Bob Marley, who had taken the world by storm with his idiosyncratic, lyrical reggae music.

In its fifth chapter, GFW has chosen to bring the world to us by documenting our celebration, and inviting the region and the diaspora to witness Guyanese style and fashion.

Meanwhile, GFW is encouraging the arts and craft community to consolidate with the fashion industry.

CEO of the GFW, Sonia Noel, recently viewed some interesting pieces of macramé and other knitting-based outfits done by men of the Camp Street Prison under the tutelage of Cassese Noel, art and craft instructor.

Noel was pleasantly surprised to see the prison encouraging its creative inmates to develop lines of crocheted, ready-to-wear urban styles. As a result, GFW is pioneering yet another dynamic collaboration with the New Amsterdam Prison.

Reverend Fay Clarke, MS, who heads training and welfare initiatives, stated that “the service welcomes and looks forward to community collaboration with its internal retraining efforts; and commends Ms Noel for this venture, while looking forward to future participation, which will motivate the inmates and create opportunities for their successful reintegration on their release.

“GFW reiterates that this is a truly empowering process for these talented inmates to be given meaningful opportunities to feature their work with pride, as well as to hone their skills for post-prison readjustment into society”. This year, GFW and Digicel will commemorate the five- year anniversary of this initiative with a Fashion Market, set for September 23 to 25, 2011.

The Digicel Fashion Market will swing its doors wide open right after its one-of-a-kind mid-morning launch on September 23.
