Government has announced that it will roll out the first phase of the Educational Television Channel by the end of this month, with Georgetown, New Amsterdam and Anna Regina being among the first areas to benefit.
Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon, at his post-Cabinet media briefing on Thursday, March 17th, said this information was revealed by Education Minister Shaik Baksh and the team of the innovative educational TV programme when Cabinet met on Tuesday, March 15th.
“This initiative would see, in a mature situation, nationwide coverage that is on the transmission side,” Dr Luncheon outlined. In the second phase, he revealed, areas such as Corentyne, beginning from Orealla; Bartica; Linden; Ituni; Kwakwani and Mahdia will benefit.
Communities such as Annai, Aishalton and Karasabai in Region Nine, and Mabaruma and Port Kaituma in Region One are to benefit in the third phase of the rolled out plan.
“This would provide signal across the length and breadth of Guyana,” Luncheon declared.
Government’s renewable energy programme in hinterland areas, which is expected to expand under the Guyana REDD+ Investment Fund, will ensure that these far-flung areas have electricity to access the services of the educational channel.
Government will rely heavily on the technical staff of the National Communications Network to provide the transmission aspect of the programme.
Once the education channel comes on stream this month-end, viewers can, from 09:00 to 23:00 hours daily, access programmes that target nursery, primary and secondary school students.
Luncheon said Cabinet was advised that content would be produced locally, as well as sourced internationally. It will also feature studio recordings and academic scripts.
