The stage is set for two days of intense golfing action when mobile telecommunications provider Digicel and the Lusignan Golf Club team up for the fourth annual Digicel Golf Classic scheduled for this weekend at the Lusignan course.
Close to 50 golfers are expected to participate, including last year’s men’s winner Roy Cummings who will be looking to wear the Red Jacket for a third successive year.
Christine Sukhram is the reigning champion on the distaff side.
The event, which is one of the biggest on the local golf calendar, is a prelude to the premier championship, the Guyana Open, which is scheduled for next month.
Close to 40 local golfers are expected to match skills with counterparts from Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada and New York.
President of the LGC Jerome Khan told this publication via telephone yesterday, that to date five overseas competitors, US based Guyanese Salim Rashid, Mo Shafi, Ayube Subhan and Andrew Tlaxton, along with, Canadian-based Guyanese Roger Rajkumar have confirmed their participation.
He, however, said the executives of the course are yet to receive confirmation from golfers from Trinidad and Suriname.

Preparations
Meanwhile, Khan disclosed that preparations for the tournament are on stream and patrons can look forward to two days of intense rivalry.
“Preparations are going extremely well, all plans from the club’s point of view are in place, we have an increase in staff so that the ground preparation is at its best ever,” Khan opined.
The LGC president also revealed that the tournament will be a challenge this time around, since the course will be a little more difficult to play on, adding that the aim is to bring the best out of the competitors.
Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer Gregory Dean will tee off the tournament at 09: 00 hours while play will get underway at 09:30 hours.
Prizes will be awarded to the top five overall best gross over the two days and the best ladies player.
There will also be prizes on both days for the lowest net, lowest gross, longest drive and Nearest-to-the-Pin.
