Kudos for the local karatekas

Dear Editor,
The karate talk will be so much more intense now.
Already plans are afoot for a karate college, and now the evidence is more than overwhelming for a ‘karate drive’ in Guyana. This is because of Guyana’s karatekas have proven themselves outstanding at the International Karate Daigaku Shoto Camp and World Cup tournament (IKD). The various performances were excellent, even though Guyana did not cop first place. They were second best to Canada.
The tally showed that Guyana ended with 45 medals, 23 of which were gold, 5 silver and 17 bronze.
Talented Guyanese, Aliyah Wong, 10, spearheaded Guyana’s success story by copping five gold medals, winning every event in her category. This is something to really get excited over. I think that many times, the sporting public takes things for granted. I am sure that this child had to make many sacrifices. So I hope that she will be rewarded. Maybe a little bursary for the ‘fighting angel’ might be in order.
So with success comes inspiration, and maybe it is time for this kind of gymnastic work to be incorporated into some of the more fortunate schools in Guyana.
Yes karate is about fighting, but it is also about wisdom, health and discipline. I am so glad that Guyana fared excellently at this inaugural IKD Cup. The showdown was held from July 7-8, and delegations from all over the globe came, competing in both the kumite and kata events (it means actual fighting (kumite) and then well choreographed movements (kata).
Dear Editor, the second IKD World Shotokan karate tournament is scheduled for 2015, and will take place in Caracas, Venezuela. I suggest preparations begin from now, and that the contingent be even bigger. I am sure that Guyana can top their first showing.

Respectfully yours,
Cristobal Jesus
