Kidnapped woman freed unharmed

Gail Perreira, the 29-year-old Agricola, East Bank Demerara shipping clerk who was allegedly kidnapped on December 23, 2010, was freed early on the morning of Monday, December 27th, police confirmed in a statement.

The Evan Phillips Park resident was found at the home of relatives at South Ruimveldt, Georgetown. Perreira was reportedly abducted outside her home by three men, who subsequently demanded a ransom of Gy$20 million for her safe return. She was unharmed, and no ransom was reportedly paid, the police release said.

During investigations into the matter, the police had arrested a number of persons, who were assisting with the investigations. Perreira’s face was reportedly covered after her abduction, and she was taken to an unidentified location. The woman was released on December 26 in the same area where she was detained, which was revealed to be Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. From there she made her way to her relatives’ home at South Ruimveldt.

Police had said in an earlier statement that Perreira was abducted just as she disembarked a taxi in front of her home, at about 20:00hrs on Thursday night, December 23rd. According to police, upon Perreira’s arrival, a black Raum motor vehicle drove up and three men exited, one of whom was armed with a handgun. The men stuck up the taxi driver, made him lie on the ground, then abducted the woman and drove away in their vehicle. They also took away the taxi driver’s motor vehicle.

The woman’s brother, Roger Perreira, subsequently received a phone call from a man who demanded a ransom of Gy$20 million in exchange for his sister’s safe return. A report was made to the Ruimveldt Police Station. The taxi driver’s vehicle has been recovered by the police on the roadway in front of the West Ruimveldt Primary School.
