Another convicted rapist is expected to remain on remand for the next month until his sentencing date, which is scheduled for August 26, 2019 at the Sexual Offences Court of the Demerara High Court.
After almost two hours of deliberation at the High Court on Tuesday, a 12-member jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict against Morris Johnson, who was accused of the offence of rape.
The charge against the taxi driver stated that between August 12 and August 13, 2017 in the county of Demerara, he engaged in sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 16.
Johnson was represented by Attorney-at-Law Ronald Burch-Smith, who, in an address to Justice Brassington Reynolds, requested that a probation report be prepared before the sentence is handed down. The application was granted. In addition, a victim impact statement was also ordered prepared, and is expected to be presented on August 26 when Johnson will be sentenced. Prosecutors Abigail Gibbs and Seeta Bishundial represented the State.
