Jagdeo notes spending power of citizens during walkabout

President Bharrat Jagdeo, in a walk about around busy Georgetown on the eve of Christmas Day, said Guyanese seem to have greater spending power this year as the country’s economy grows.

He, however, acknowledged that many are not able to enjoy the festivities because of their circumstances. “There are still many families who have to make do with very little around Christmas time,” he said. “So my heart goes out to those, and I hope that they, too will try as much as possible to enjoy the season.”

Jagdeo, who was seemingly cheerful and in the Christmas spirit, pleaded with those who can afford it to give of their best during this season. The president is hopeful that, in years to come, Guyana could move to a place where there are no less fortunate citizens.

Despite this, the head of state is pleased that the five per cent increase offered to public servants, though it was not all they expected, and the increases in the private sector have allowed citizens to financially enjoy Christmas. He related to situations in Europe and even the Caribbean, where people are losing their jobs and there are wage freezes, noting that Guyana has done comparatively well.

“I’m really, really pleased with what I’ve seen today,” the president said as he talked about the business atmosphere. He told the media at the end of the three- hour walkabout that even a staunch government critic, who he declined to name, has seen the progress. “He met me in the store and said it’s the best ever. Coming from him, I thought it was something; I think this is good.”

Meanwhile, the president in a Christmas wish for the country, is hopeful that citizens make the most of the holiday. He noted that it is quite redundant, since this is synonymous of a Guyanese Christmas. During his walkabout, Jagdeo said he noticed that Guyanese are already making attempts to ensure that they enjoy the season by shopping for liquor, clothing and food.

“This is why so many people come home to experience this, and the reunion of families and friends, and the camaraderie and the love that exists at this time, and the uniqueness  of our Christmas.”

The president along with  Commerce  Minister  Manniram Prashad, Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, Transport Minister Robeson Benn and several other officials, visited several stores along Regent and Camp Streets as they interacted with shoppers, many of whom shared their concerns on issues affecting them.
