Jagdeo’s leadership of the armed forces is unmatched

Dear Editor,

There has been much talk about President Bharrat Jagdeo’s tenure as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. Opposition politicians have accused the president and some ministers of government of deliberately trying to influence the work of the security agencies. They have even accused government of not providing the kind of resources needed for the law enforcement agencies to carry out their work. This is very far removed from the truth, as a simple check will show that the budgetary allocations to the police, army, and fire services were increased tenfold.

The leadership of the security forces would also attest to the fact that the support given by the government was tremendous.

Mr. Jagdeo has demitted office as president of Guyana and also Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. Some who are bent on partisan politics will say that Mr. Jagdeo and his government did not do much for the officers. Well, perhaps the speeches of the heads of the various sectors – police, army and fire – would serve to debunk these claims.

The heads of these agencies a while ago hailed the leadership of Mr Jagdeo at an appreciation ceremony held at the Police Officers’ Mess Hall, Eve Leary. At the ceremony, Mr Jagdeo expressed his gratitude to the Joint Services for hosting such a ceremony in his honour, and said that he cherishes the work that they have done together and the achievements they have realised.

Yours truly,

R Charles
