Indigenous peoples are at the centre of govt’s development agenda – Minister Sukhai

Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai hands over gifts to children of Taushida

Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai during a recent three-day outreach to Region 9 assured residents that government has heeded their calls because indigenous peoples have always been at the centre of development. Minister Sukhai accompanied by Permanent Secretary Nigel Dharamlall and liaison officer Yvonne Pearson visited Taushida, Wowetta and Surama, where residents had the opportunity to interact with the team.
Minister Sukhai took the opportunity to enlighten residents of Taushida of some of the Ministry’s functions. She stated that the ministry is considered the focal point that facilitates and makes representation for Amerindian development since its establishment seven years ago.
Guyana is the only country where Amerindian leaders can meet with the president and government officials to discuss issues relating to Amerindian development. The National Toshaos council (NTC) and the Indigenous People’s commission (IPC) also play an important role in Amerindian rights.
Minister Sukhai mentioned that many requests made by residents may not be addressed immediately, but the ministry will continue to represent the Amerindian people to deal with priority requests.
The Minister lauded Taushida residents for being productive and ensuring that the presidential grant is put to good use. The village now has a shop, a sewing shop, a guest house and community centre. However, residents raised concerns about water supply and roads, and Minister Sukhai said that her ministry was unable to assist with the roads due to some challenges with financial resources. She promised to make representation at the Ministry Housing of Water to deal with the water issue.
Minister Sukhai also congratulated Surama for keeping their village in very good condition. Surama is known for its tourism attraction.
Residents raised concerns about misuse of resources by community leaders, and asked for state auditors to assist. In response the Minister stated that the ministry realises the need for auditors in communities and has been dealing with the matter.  She assured residents that the ministry will put things in place to deal with it.
