‘I have no objections to debating anyone at anytime and anywhere’ – Ramotar

Presidential candidate of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic, (PPP/C) Donald Ramotar, says he is not opposed to having an all-encompassing debate with fellow presidential candidates of the Alliance For Change (AFC) and the recently formed A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

Speaking at a media briefing at the party’s headquarters on August 5, Ramotar said that he had never opposed being part of any debate, but was never given any official invitation to be part of a national debate of that nature.

“Let’s see what will happen before elections … I have no objections to debating anyone at anytime and anywhere,” Ramotar remarked.

Over the last few months, there have been several calls by various sections of Guyanese for the presidential candidates of the three major parties to debate each other on one platform, ready and willing to answer all questions posed to them by the public.

However, this is yet to be a reality, despite the fact that all three candidates have indicated that they have no problem with appearing at such a forum.

The closest the presidential candidates have come to making public appearances is at the private sector-hosted programmes that saw these presidential hopefuls rolling out their plans for Guyana should they be elected to government this year. At three separate luncheons hosted by the Guyana Manufacturers and Services Association (GMSA), each presidential hopeful was tasked with addressing issues that directly affect the growth of the private sector.

A public debate between the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) presidential candidate David Granger (he is now the APNU candidate), Ramotar and AFC’s Khemraj Ramjattan was scheduled for April 20 at the University of Guyana, but the planned event did not materialise.
