“I came up with the idea of Digital Technology in my bedroom” — CEO

Digital Technology CEO Terrence Krishendat Sukhu

At age 30, Terrence Krishendat Sukhu, the founder and CEO of Digital Technology, is ecstatic that he can play a role in revolutionising the information communications technology sector in Guyana.
In an exclusive interview, the young entrepreneur recalled his days as a student and some of the challenges that he encountered in his early days in the competitive world of business. Those obviously were not deterrents but building blocks to his success.
The smiling CEO explained that Digital Technology was an idea he came up with in his bedroom – out of which he operated the business, while he was employed at the University of Guyana as an information technology technician.
“At the conceptualised stage, I saw two needs: one was that lecturers and students were having difficulties in accessing information technology services and products, and  the other was there was a need for such services in my community hence I decided to fulfil both needs by establishing a small business.
“My first sale came from a lecturer, Ms Urmimala Ray at the University of Guyana where I was given an advance payment to purchase a laptop for her and we exceeded the expectation thus fulfilling my obligation and based on that sale, we were recommended to other customers,” he fondly recalled.
While his main priority was to bridge the gap in connection, awareness and knowledge between the people in the city and country with regards to technology, he and his then business partner established an information technology school and storefront in his community of Grove on the Public Road. Soon after, he received a scholarship to study networking technology in India.
As a result of the scholarship, he had to divert his energies to studying. Upon his return, the school did not materialise as they had expected, so he decided to cease operations of the school. This setback did not deter the young entrepreneur, who decided to focus his energies on the storefront business, providing ICT products and services.
He was still employed at the university, but managed to conduct his business in the little spare time he had.  However, there came a time when managing work and the business became complicated, so he resigned.
The business continued to grow at a rapid pace as he forged alliances with international manufacturers of ICT services and products such as Dell, HP, and Microsoft. It eventually evolved into a solutions provider of information, communication, and technological products and services for consumers and professional markets.
Sukhu said when he started the business, the market was dominated by a group of companies.
As Digital Technology started to develop and become popular in society, he said with a “wide smile on his face” that people started to refer to his business as a “fly-by-night” company, but they weathered the storm with support from their international partners and other stakeholders.
“The support has been our driving force to stay focused and keep providing the best products and services to our customers, thus the erecting of a brand new headquarters…,” Sukhu said. The company’s new headquarters is a beautiful building at Lot 20 Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
The dedicated husband and father of two has accomplished much in his life, apart from his business. As a precocious 19-year-old, he was made the youngest secretary of his cricket club. At 20, he became the youngest captain to lead his Diamond Sports Club team and at age of 23, he was elected the president of the Diamond Sports Club.
At 23, he also got married to his wife Subrina, the woman he met on his first day on the job at the University of Guyana, and at 24, he was blessed with his first daughter.
Sukhu said his mother is his greatest role model, citing her strength, courage, and dedication as a single mother who overcame all challenges in raising him and his five siblings.
