Dear Editor,
I congratulate the West Indies Cricket team for their sensational performance to win the T20 World Cup. It has been long since something of substance came the way of the West Indies.
The result was really revealing too and it emphasised how well the Caribbean side played. I was a lad when West Indies lost the 1983 World Cup (50 over competition) to India) and maybe I will never be healed. However, with this T20, and to get it against Sri Lanka on their home turf is truly sweet.
I feel the pride of the 1976-1995 era coming back. This World T20 trophy victory is just the fourth major international title for West Indies. Clive Lloyd’s team won the first two Cricket World Cup tournaments (in 1975 and in 1979). Then Brian Lara’s team captured the Champions Trophy in England in 2004. That means the West Indies are the only one team to win the 50-over World Cup, the Champions Trophy and the World Twenty20.
However, amidst this understandable euphoria, the West Indies must buckle down and undergo some redressing. They, of course, must focus on the wicket-keeping aspect and another front-line batsman. Also, the board must work out players’ contracts and availability.
Yours sincerely,
Jermaine Paul
