General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party ( PPP), Donald Ramotar, is certain that the development of the electricity sector through the hydro- power project will boost the creation of jobs and place Guyana on a path to inevitable development. Ramotar made the comment when asked about his plans as presidential hopeful in the upcoming August 2011 elections, should he be selected as a candidate.
The general secretary believes that “ job creation is most vital at this point in time”, and the propelling of the energy sector is key to addressing this concern.
“ If we have hydro- power, then our whole manufacturing sector can develop and we can plan to have a strong and growing industrial climate, which in many ways will solve our job creation problems.” He further stated that the Linden- to- Lethem road is seen as an important step in bridging territorial gaps, which can foster economic development.
Ramotar, moreover, mentioned the development of a deep water harbour as another initiative of the present administration which he or any subsequent candidate selected at the next elections should build on and complete.
“ So I think any PPP government will examine these things, as well as other infrastructural works, and build on them.” Ramotar disclosed that the party has always worked as a team, and would have to develop a manifesto which would include projects to be completed.
“ There are some obvious things that we have to carry on to fruition. Some of the things which this government has started and built on, what we already have.” Another area which Ramotar finds extremely important is the changing social landscape as it relates to a growing unity of diverse cultures.
“ There seems to be improved ethnic relations and an emerging unique Guyanese culture that was created through a growing unity of diverse blends, distinct from their origins.” He remarked that this unity among sections of society, where people of different strands come together, is seen as very positive.
Ramotar added that providing jobs and encouraging unity among Guyana’s diverse sects are just few of the issues on his agenda. He boasted of the party’s growing appeal and countless successes, which he said has enabled the party to stay in power for the past 18 years.
Ramotar stressed that the PPP has won the hearts of the people by delivering the goods and services with a philosophical position to directly impact the masses.
“ We have reduced poverty and debts, and have revolutionised housing, healthcare and education; and these are the things which have a direct impact on people,” Ramotar said.
