Just one day after being further remanded to prison on an indictable charge, 57-year-old Mark Grimmond, the owner of Rockies Hotel, was granted bail by the Demerara High Court. His attorney, Bernard Da Silva was successful in a bail application at the court last week.
Grimmond was released on G$500,000 bail, which was granted by Justice Navindra Singh, however, his alleged “hit man” Chatterpaul Singh remains on remand for the allegations they jointly faced.
The matter is currently being dealt with at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and the trial is set to commence on July 24, 2019, which was announced by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan last Thursday when the case was called.
When the duo reappeared before the Chief Magistrate on the last occasion, attorneys for Grimmond, Da Silva and Mark Waldron, made new bail applications on behalf of their client but was again unsuccessful due to lack of special reasons presented. Meanwhile, Singh, who was unrepresented, was also further remanded.
Grimmond of Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD), and his co-accused, Singh, of Cummingsburg, Georgetown, were slapped with a joint charge alleging that they both conspired with each other and persons unknown to kill Dwayne Grant, a businessman of Lethem, Region Nine.
Police reports indicate that Grant received information that the accused were plotting to kill him.
After reporting the matter, Police arrested Singh, who was found with a firearm in his possession. After intense questioning, Singh reportedly confessed to the police that he was contracted by the hotelier to carry out the execution. Grimmond was then subsequently apprehended and placed in custody.
