Home Affairs Ministry, THAG in security pact

Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee believes that there must be adequate security measures in place to protect tourists in light of the rapid growth of the tourism sector.

Rohee made these remarks on Wednesday, January 26th, during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Home Affairs Ministry and the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana. Rohee explained that the Home Affairs Ministry has recognised the contribution the tourism industry is making to Guyana’s development, and by extension developing the tourism sector. As a result, he explained, this development requires that law enforcement officials are trained in addressing issues that may affect the wellbeing of tourists.

He said, though, that members of the security sector must also be sensitised of the peculiarities of tourism; that the security environment is conducive to the attraction of tourists. “Concomitantly, we have to ensure that our tourism sector is not exploited by unsavoury elements. This would require establishment of systems and procedures by the tourism sector and the security sector of the country to protect the tourism product,” Rohee said while addressing representatives of THAG during the signing ceremony for the MoU.

However, he said the challenge that may be faced in this area is the uniqueness of Guyana’s tourism, in that it focuses largely on eco-tourism.

Rohee further welcomed the MoU so that these challenges can be conquered. “This memorandum of understanding, which also has the full support of the Tourism, Industry and Commerce Ministry of Guyana and the Guyana Police Force, will set the tone for an increased level of cooperation which will benefit all stakeholders,” Rohee said.

He explained that that ministry is availing itself to provide support to THAG in its efforts at making Guyana a significant tourist destination in the Caribbean and Latin American region.
