In a thrilling, final showdown Hikers ‘ A’ evened the score with GCC ‘ A’ on Thursday night, concluding the men’s first- division con test of the Banks DIH ‘ Nite’ Hockey tournament at Thirst Park ground.Having already lost 2 – 3 in their previous match against GCC, Hikers re stored balance as they re tained their title.
Hikers delivered a 2 – 0 defeat to the GCC side, to break the ‘ Bourda boys’ winning streak.
Robert France gave GCC’s net its first up set in the 26th minute, as he penetrated the de fence of full- back Philip Fernandes and goalkeep er Michael Xavier.
Picking up even more steam, Hikers’ Randy Hope doubled the lead in the very next minute by driving to his left and placing his shot past the advancing Xavier.
Entering the second half, GCC fervently pursued a means of gaining leverage over Hikers, but failed miserably, succeeding only in preventing Hikers from upping their win margin. With both parties unable to score a goal in the second half, the Hikers took home the victory.
Earlier in the evening, in the second- division category, GCC ‘ B’ defeated the Hikers Cadets. In another one- sided affair, GCC opened the score in the 14th minute off a skilled reversed stick shot from Shaka Gill. Despite several tries from the Hikers, GCC managed to preserve their lead and secured the second division title from a 1 – 0 success.
And in another one for a GCC side, in the female exhibition match of the night, GCC Tigers easily made their way to a 2 – 0 win over Hikers ladies, with goals scored by Gabriella Xavier and Kerensa Fernandes.
Next on the hockey calendar will be GTT’s National Indoor Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from October 25- 31 with the exception of Friday, October 29, which is reserved for a Guyana Boxing Board of Control event at the same venue.
