More than one week after 66-yearold, Banu Bebe Jahooral of Lot 5 Cone Shop Street, De Willem Village, West Coast Demerara was found dead, police have questioned several persons in connection with the murder and one person has been detained.
The man in custody name was given as “Georgie”, and according to information received, he would normally visit the now dead woman’s house to assist her in clearing the bushes, trimming the flower plants and any other chores.
The man reportedly told investigators that he was at the house prior to the gruesome discovery.
Initially, after the discovery, one man who resides at the woman’s home was arrested but released after he presented an alibi.
He claimed that he was working and upon returning home, he found the woman in a semi naked state in a room on lower flat. He raised an alarm and the police were summoned.
He is not the son-in-law of the dead woman as was reported. He was more or less a caretaker, according to one of the woman’s daughters, Shamina.
However, Shamina refuted reports in the press that her mother’s tongue was cut and her throat slit. The grieving daughter disclosed that none of the sort is true and that the autopsy proved that her mother was strangled to death. When asked whether or not the woman was sexually molested before she was killed, Shamina refused to comment.
However, she confirmed that a few samples of blood and other evidence were taken and sent overseas to be analysed, and should return as soon as possible.
On that note, she highlighted that she is pleased with the pace of investigation and was hopeful that someone will be charged soon.
Mohamed Haniff, brother of the dead woman on the other hand expressed dissatisfaction with the investigations, and urged the ranks to speed up their inquiries so that they can know something substantive before they leave Guyana.
“I am certain, that when we leave, the case will come to a halt, and they will never find the perpetrators. All they doing is working wild and taking no advice in an effort to prosecute someone,” the man noted.
The semi nude body of Jahooral, also called Nazaleen, was discovered about 15: 00h on New Year’s Day in a room on the bottom flat of her house. The blouse that she was wearing was reportedly wrapped around her neck while her other garments were missing along with the jewellery that she was wearing at the time.
Additional information provided revealed that one of the woman’s earrings and a denture was found next to a swinger under the house, some 15 feet from where her body was found.
From reports gathered at the crime scene, Zakheer Ali, a taxi driver left the house earlier in the day to work, and upon returning, he called out to the woman but there was no answer which resulted in him searching the house where he found the woman’s semi nude body in the bottom flat of the house in a spare room.
She was laid to rest on Friday. She leaves to mourn her husband, four children, seven grand children and two brothers.
