Gy$82M being spent to furnish schools

Education Minister Shaik Baksh said parents can be assured that all schools will be fully equipped with adequate furniture in the new academic term beginning September 5.

Baksh said the Education Ministry has been able to obtain an additional Gy$82 million to help in the acquisition of additional furniture.

The education minister noted that the ministry is now in the process of building the additional furniture for schools. The system, he said, is now decentralised so as to meet the needs of schools that are in need of furniture.

Baksh also noted that officials from all 10 regions in Guyana are working closely with schools within their districts to ensure that all the necessary preparations are in place before schools reopen. He also said that an intense campaign is on to clean all school compounds within the Georgetown district.

Government is already spending in excess of Gy$179 million to repair and maintain 49 schools in Georgetown that require urgent attention. The work is part of the central education ministry’s work programme, which aims to ensure that these buildings are in a good state when school reopens in September. Under the multi-million-dollar programme, work is being carried out on 23 secondary schools, 14 primary schools and 12 nursery schools. Some Gy$29.8 million is being spent on nursery schools, Gy$49.4 million on primary schools, and Gy$100.4 million on secondary schools. Apart from the repair and maintenance programme, Gy$34.3 million is being spent on infrastructural works on 13 schools in the city. Work in this category includes repairs to fences and sanitary blocks.

Meanwhile, construction of the Leonora Technical Institute should be completed by next week; while the Mahaicony Technical Institute is slated to be completed by the end of September. Both institutes are expected to formally be opened in October.
