President Bharrat Jagdeo has delivered on his promise made at the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club’s (GMR&SC) 2010 Annual Awards Ceremony.
At that event, the president had disclosed that his government will inject Gy$40 million into the resurfacing of the South Dakota Circuit. Resurfacing is currently in progress, and is expected to be completed by next weekend.
When completed, the long-awaited upgrading of the circuit, Guyana’s only motor racing track, will cost Gy$74 million.
President of the GMR&SC, Raj Boodhoo, informed Guyana Times International Sports, via telephone yesterday, that the resurfacing of the track, which commenced at the beginning of the year, is expected to be finished in time for the season-opening Endurance Race Meet, which has been shifted to March 21 due to work still ongoing on the track.
Boodhoo further mentioned that, upon completion of the Endurance Race Meet, the club will undertake further re-surfacing on the turns and shoulders, and this is expected to cost another Gy$7million. Dipcon Engineering Services Ltd is the contracting firm doing the work.
Boodhoo also revealed that the remaining events for the GMR&SC calendar year will go ahead as planned. The April 3 race meet will be the next event, followed by the drag racing event, which is set for May 1.
This will be followed by the initial leg of the Caribbean Series, on May 23 at Dover Speedway in Jamaica, while Go Kart racing will return to the club’s headquarters on Albert Street on June 5, with another drag meet on July 3 at the South Dakota Circuit.
The second round of Circuit Racing returns on July 31, before the August 21 Drag Meet, and that will be followed by the deployment of local drivers for the second leg of the Caribbean Series at Bushy Park in Barbados, on August 28.
The sport then enjoys a pause until November 13, when the final leg of the Caribbean Series will be held at the South Dakota Circuit, preceding the final event of the year, which is the Endurance Meet on December 4 at the South Dakota Circuit.
