Gy$5.4M being spent to rehabilitate aquaculture farm at Anna Regina

The Agriculture Ministry is presently spending some Gy$ 5.4 million to rehabilitate seven fishing ponds, as well as re-fencing and renovating the administrative building at the aquaculture farm in Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast. The investment by the ministry will see a significant boost in the fishing sector on the Essequibo Coast and will offer aquaculture farmers a new variety of tilapia fish.

Works are ongoing to rehabilitate the fish ponds and administrative building at the aquaculture farm

Minister within the Agriculture Ministry, Ali Baksh on Saturday visited the aquaculture compound and inspected ongoing works. According to him, the contract has been awarded jointly to Manhood Boodram Sukhai and Satesh Narine.
Baksh said Sukhai’s contracting firm is responsible for the excavating, re-shaping and rehabilitating of seven fishing ponds, as well as the rehabilitation of the administrative building, while Narine is responsible for the re-fencing of the compound.
Baksh said he is satisfied with the progress of the works. He said the project will have a positive impact on aquaculture development in Essequibo and will see the distribution of improved breeds of tilapia fingerlings to farmers. At present, he said, there is a fish laboratory, which is assisting science students to experiment on fish nutrition.
The aquaculture farm usually sells fingerlings to farmers at a cheap cost. Technical advice is also provided to aquaculture farmers by officers attached to the Fisheries Department on the Essequibo Coast. The project is expected to be completed within two weeks.
