Gy$46M approved for construction of core homes

Government will be building an additional 300 core homes for poor Guyanese in different areas. This is in addition to similar houses being built in Regions Five and Six through similar initiatives.

Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon, told a news conference last week that Cabinet has approved the construction of these houses in Westminster, West Bank Demerara and in Lusignan and Nonpareil, East Coast Demerara. Luncheon said, “This initiative of the Ministry of Housing and Water to supply homes to the clearly indigent members of the Guyanese community is done at a minimum cost.” He said this initiative will see Gy$46 million being spent on construction, and it will help people gain access to low-financing opportunities through banks. “These core homes essentially are financed by central government and the recipients contribute around Gy$100,000 and everything else is done, the provision of the land, the construction of the home and the necessaries”. Luncheon said these homes are essentially for people who fall below the low income category.

In September, the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) distributed homes to some nine families in Nonpareil.

The core homes project is a collaborative effort between government and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and falls under the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) second Low-Income Settlement Programme currently being executed at a cost of US$27.9 million. This project is expected to improve the access of low-income families to enhanced living conditions, through a wide range of housing solutions and access to house lots.
