Gy$275M contracts signed to improve infrastructure in security sector

The Home Affairs Ministry, through the Citizen Security Programme, has signed several contracts totalling Gy$275.3 million for remodelling the Home Affairs Ministry’s head office building and rehabilitating six police stations in C and A divisions.

Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, speaking at the signing ceremony held at the ministry, said the six police stations slated for rehabilitation would no doubt add to the greater effectiveness and efficiency of the Guyana Police Force.

He said the aim behind this massive infrastructural development is to make these stations more user-friendly. Installing certain facilities will also build greater public confidence in carrying out operations such as identification parades, and will cater to victims of domestic violence, among others.

With regards to remodelling the ministry’s head office building, the services that will be offered in the new building will remain virtually the same, but the aesthetics and conditions will be drastically improved, making it more comfortable for persons to access the services.

“Given the pivotal role of the Home Affairs Ministry in ensuring public order and security, as well as to modernise the architecture of the security sector, some structural adjustments will have to be made as well,” the minister said.

Rohee said all the projects are important to the security sector, and he urged the contractors to employ every effort to ensure that the obligations reflected in the contracts are adhered to, and to ensure timely completion of the projects.

The contracts include Gy$141million for remodelling the head office building of the ministry by Pioneer General Contracting Services; Gy$19.2 million for the rehabilitation of the Mahaica Police Station; Gy$19.1 million for rehabilitating the Cove and John Police Station; Gy$17.9 million for works to be done to the Beterverwagting Police Station; Gy$24.9 million for works to be done to the Sparendaam Police Station; Gy$22.9 million for works to be done to the Providence Police Station, and Gy$30.3 million for the Timehri Police Station to be rehabilitated.

Additionally, a contract was awarded to VIKAB Engineering for the supervision of the rehabilitation works to be executed at the ministry’s head office building.
