Gy$21.7M market tarmac commissioned at Charity

Minister within the Local Government and Regional Development Ministry Norman Whittaker last Thursday commissioned a Gy$ 21.7 million market tarmac at Charity, Essequibo, as he encouraged vendors to abandon roadside vending.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Whittaker said the commissioning and the official handing over of the all-weather tarmac is one way government is trying to remove vendors from the roadside. He said the tarmac is very spacious and provides a comfortable selling environment for all vendors.

Whittaker called on vendors on the Charity roadside to utilise the new tarmac, and praised those vendors who have already made efforts to utilise the facility.
Speaking on the construction of tarmacs, he said Cabinet has moved to have all open-air market tarmacs across the country fully utilised because it is an investment of people’s money.
Whittaker warned that should vendors still remain on the roadside; the ministry will be soliciting the services of the Home Affairs Ministry and the Public Service Ministry to have them removed.
Whittaker also noted that while he was in Bartica recently, he noticed many persons vending along the roadside and upon enquiry, he was told that business was slow and there was insufficient space on the tarmac itself. The minister pointed out that roadside vending is prevalent in many areas across the country and the government is moving to have the practice corrected.
The minister also called for a register with the names of all vendors who will be operating on the tarmac. “I want business to be done in an orderly manner with separate sections for meat, fish and groceries.” So far, the minister has handed over six tarmacs to neighbourhood democratic councils (NDCs) throughout the country.
Accompanying the minister was Region Two Chairman Parmanand Persaud, councillors of the Charity NDC and Regional Development Officer Daneshwar Gangoo.
Following the commissioning ceremony, the delegation toured the Charity Market area and inspected the drainage and irrigation network.
