Gy$181M contract signed for upgrade of roads in Berbice

Residents of Region Five will soon benefit from rehabilitated roads between the areas of Rosignol and Zeelust, as a contract worth Gy$131 million for the Community Road Improvement Project (CRIP) was signed on Sunday, July 24, between B& J Civil Works and the Local Government Ministry, at the Rosignol market.

According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), this is another government initiative to invest in improving the country’s infrastructure, and the contract will see 14 roads being rehabilitated, asphalted and marked for pedestrian safety. A culvert will also be rehabilitated, as would be the entire drainage and irrigation system between the areas mentioned above.

The signing ceremony was attended by Housing and Water Minister Irfaan Ali, Permanent Secretary in the Local Government and Regional Development Ministry, Nigel Dharamlall; Project Coordinator of CRIP, Karen Roopchand; Neighbourhood Democratic Council Chairman Shameer Ally, Regional Democratic Council Chairman Harrinarine Baldeo, and residents of the region.

Minister Irfaan Ali lamented that, in his premier years in the public sector, one had to dedicate at least two days to travel from Georgetown to Berbice (return).

However, yesterday, he and his team attended the Berbice Exposition in East Berbice, and after leaving that region (Six) in the wee hours of the morning, they travelled to Region Three, West Demerara, and made it back to Rosignol, Region Five, before 10:30 hrs. This, he said, is testimony to the investments the current administration has made over the years to improve infrastructure to benefit the lives of all citizens. July 15 last saw a similar CRIP contract inked, the value of which was Gy$188 million to rehabilitate 14 old housing scheme roads in Bath, Region Five, where approximately 13,000 residents will benefit. On July 19, another contract, worth Gy$163 million, benefiting 35,000 residents in Tuschen and Uitvlugt in Region Three, was signed by Dipcon Engineering Services Limited.
