The Custom Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard Unit on Wednesday intercepted a fishing vessel in the Demerara River with more than Gy$ 145 million worth in cocaine and compressed Marijuana.

According to reports, CANU officials acting on information received by the GFD Coast Guard Unit, intercepted the Bismark 2 which belongs to a Chinese national, with 104 kilogrammes (kg) of compressed marijuana, and 27 kg of cocaine. CANU head, James Singh disclosed that after the boat was intercepted, the illegal substance was detected and the crew members were subsequently taken into custody assisting with investigations. He further stated that CANU is awaiting information from the maritime authorities with the contact information for the owner of the vessel. Guyana Times International understands that the boat was heading to Trinidad and Tobago.

Singh pointed out that CANU has stepped up their operations at various ports as a result of the recent increase in drug trafficking activities involving small fishing vessels. On January 10, members of the Custom and Excise Department unearthed more than 13.6 kg of compressed marijuana in a container at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) Wharf, Lombard Street, Georgetown.

It was reported that the illegal substance was detected among a shipment of pumpkin destined for Barbados. Well-placed sources confirmed that a TROPICAL container was in the process of scanning when a blackish object was detected, and upon closer inspection, the marijuana was found.
