GWI welcomes Baksh as new CEO

The chairman and board of directors of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) welcomed Shaik Baksh as the new chief executive officer of the national water utility. Baksh, who has commenced his official duties, stated that his immediate focus will be to propel GWI to greater profitability and enhance the quality of service provided to customers countrywide.

“My extensive years in Guyana’s water sector have provided me with unique insight into areas which are currently underperforming.” Baksh stated, “for GWI to succeed, it must begin implementing tools for increased revenue as well as improving the service which it provides to customers”. According to a GWI release, Baksh holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in management studies; the former was obtained at the University of Guyana, while the latter was acquired from the University of London.
The new chief executive has had extensive experience managing business entities such as Guyana Stores Limited, where he served as chief executive officer. He also served as chairman of the board of the National Engineering Corporation. Baksh significantly contributed to the sustained profitability of the Guyana Oil Company during his tenure as chairman of the board and later chief executive.
Baksh previously held the office of minister in two critical ministries; he was housing and water minister from 1998 to 2006 and education minister from 2006 to 2011. “I anticipate working with GWI’s vibrant management team and board of directors,” the new chief executive said. “Customers can be assured that my team and I are exploring innovative ways to improve service delivery and to enhance the overall efficiency of the nation’s water sector”.
