GuyExpo 2012 is likely to be ‘the biggest one’ of all

Dear Editor,
It has become a major part of the social landscape (like Christmas) and I just love it. This year it may get even bigger. I am talking about GuyExpo of course. It is really the premiere trade and exposition fair in Guyana and the Caribbean.
GuyExpo 2012 is now expected to attract several international buyers and sellers, with the potential of creating lucrative business opportunities for locals. This is the anticipation and it was echoed by the acting tourism minister. The minister explained that the goal this year is to bring in a galore of buyers and investors into the event. In fact, it is not just all talk too.
So far GuyExpo has attracted and registered more than 150 overseas investors, coming from various countries like Brazil, Barbados, China, India, Canada and the United States of America. The finer details so far show that some 400 micro, medium and large-scale businesses have already registered.
This is indeed symptomatic of the potential and opportunities that are likely to come with this year’s GuyExpo. I am personally looking forward to the focus that will be placed on promoting Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and the former president’s agriculture initiative.
I think that these two promotions will really ignite deep thinking in many foreigners. I like the thrust of the event too. The idea is to promote business and investment opportunities in the country within the context of the LCDS.
Guyana is quite somewhat immersed in the low carbon pathway to development. The acting tourism minister also added that this year’s theme (“Strengthening the Traditional, Embracing the New”) reflects on Guyana’s lead role in agriculture around the Caribbean. The trade fair will also be centred on food security and sustainability, not only in Guyana, but for the entire region. In many ways then, I can say that GuyExpo 2012 will be ‘really and truly’ historical.
For a few readers who are still not updated, they must take note that this year’s exhibition will see many changes, including an earlier starting time. The official opening ceremony will start at 18: 00h on September 27. The gates will be opened to the public from 15: 00h to 23: 00h on Friday, and 13: 00h to 23: 00h on Saturday and Sunday. I urge all to make this year ‘the’ one.

Excited Guyanese,
David Reis
