Guyanese professor elevated to top position within prestigious Royal Canadian Society

Guyanese academic and engineering science scholar, Professor Jamal Deen has been elevated to the position of Director of the Applied Science and Engineering Division of the Academy of Sciences within the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). He is the first Guyanese to hold that esteemed title.

Professor Deen was elected to the position at the Annual General Meeting of the RSC last month.

The Royal Society of Canada, founded in 1882, is the oldest institution devoted to recognizing excellence in learning and research, as well as accomplishments in the arts, humanities and sciences. The organisation is known to be “the senior national body of distinguished Canadian scholars, artists and scientists” and is one of the most prestigious research institutes in the world, churning out a large volume of researches in various disciplines.

As Division Director for 2011-2013, Deen’s responsibilities will include chairing of Division meetings; preparing the Division’s annual reports; chairing the Division’s Committee for the Selection of New Fellows and attending the Annual General Meetings of the RSC and the Induction and Awards Ceremony among other duties.
