Guyanese made feature film to debut in N.Y

Ek Chameli Mali Ke Liye or A Jasmine for a Gardner, a film made by Guyanese Mahadeo Shivraj and Chuaraumanie Bissoondyal, debuts this weekend in Queens. The movie is a merging of Hollywood and Bollywood approaches into a distinctive Caribbean genre. The film features the song-and-dance opera style of Bollywood movies copying the style of Kashmir Ki Kali, Sangam, and Devdas.

Mahadeo Shivraj has been active in the theatre for the past 25 years as actor/ producer/director/ set-designer. He made his debut at the National Cultural Centre in Guyana and to date has acted in over 90 plays professionally in Guyana and the USA. He has directed approximately 30 plays and did the set-design for everyone. He is the creator and director of the hit stage series – “LAFF TIL YUH BELLY BUST” now in its 8th year. He has acted in the independent films: Playing Both Sides, Deep Trouble, Pressure, Snitch in New York, The Laverne Affair, Kicking it High, Sacrifice, Truth, Karma and The Awakening.

Some of the actors in the film are; Mahadeo Shivraj, Bhavana Samtani, Gem-Madhoo Nascimento, Nazim Hussain, Dimple Mendonca and Neaz Subhan.

The movie will debut on Saturday at the PS 268 Auditorium – 92-07 175th Street, Jamaica, NY 11432.
