Guyanese team instructor Ganesh Babulall has praised his young students for their impressive victorious display of competitive karate at the Tiger Claw International Sport Karate Championships, held at Central Regional Indoor Sport Arena, Saith Park, Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago last weekend.

The visiting Guyanese team competed in various categories and copped 12 trophies and several medals after the two-day tournament against top competitors from Trinidad and Tobago.

Babulall was pleased that his young students made their international competitive debut in Trinidad.

He mentioned that this competition has made his karatekas more motivated, and he assured that they would work harder to further develop their athletic abilities.

“I know this is a foundation for them. I’m glad that they came to Trinidad in their first international tournament and won. They now know what the feeling of winning is. This is just the beginning. I will continue to work with them so that we can go on to achieve even bigger things,” Babulall stated.

Shannon Benjamin, who competed in the 14-15 division beginners’ category, was victorious in block breaking and sparring (female). She also claimed third in the self-defence segment.

Young Marais Lowdeen gave an impressive performance in the Boys’ equivalent when he attained the runner-up position in the self-defence category, third in the traditional kata category, and fourth in sparring.

Sheldon Aaron was crowned champion of the traditional katas in the Boys’ 16-17 division. He was the runner-up in block breaking, third in sparring, and fourth in the creative freestyle katas.

Babulall, who is a 5th Dan in Shotokan karate, also competed in the 18- 35 black belt division. He emerged the victor in block breaking and traditional kata. The Guyanese instructor was the runner-up in self-defence and the creative kata.
