Guyanese cricketers performing well in Canada

Several Guyanese cricketers have continued to shine in Canada’s Elite and Premier League cricket competitions over the past weeks with outstanding batting and bowling performances.

Krishna Arjune
Travis Blyden
Trevon Garraway

On Saturday, former Guyana opening batsman Krishna Arjune fashioned a brilliant 108 to spur Viking Cricket Club in the Elite League, while Wasim Haslim also registered a century (119) for Apollo Sports Club.
Travis Blyden, in his second season for United Cricket Club in the premier League division, also showed great consistency. Having already chalked up four half-centuries from seven limited-over games, he scored an attractive 94 which was punctuated with seven fours and three sixes from 109 deliveries.
Former national fast bowler Trevon Garraway, representing Islanders Cricket Club, picked up a five-wicket haul, while Gavin Singh hit a stroke-filled 103 for the same team.
The right-handed Arjune, who has been plying his trade in North America since 2001, cracked seven fours and two sixes in his match-winning innings.
He told Caribbean Times International that he is looking forward to regaining his place on the national team. Having represented Guyana in 40 first-class matches, Arjune still feels he can contribute to the team in the next Regional Four-Day tournament.
He stated that he was also in Trinidad and Tobago earlier this year where he scored heavily in the domestic competition there.
Meanwhile, Haslim and Blyden also spoke about their participation in the Canadian leagues this year. Haslim, a pugnacious left-hander, plays for Georgetown Cricket Club, while Blyde represents Guyana Defence Force in Guyana.
Haslim felt it was another golden opportunity for him to make a name and further enhance his cricketing career. He is anxious to play for Guyana at the senior level and strongly believes exposure of this kind will benefit him tremendously.
Blyden, 23, also echoed similar sentiments, noting that he wishes to represent Guyana in all three formats of the game. He said the cricket in Canada for the past two years has been fantastic.
He enjoys the atmosphere and also admires the standard and competitive nature of the game which has attracted international players from around the globe. Apart from these four players, ex-West Indies opener Ryan Ramdass has been in prolific form as well, registering two hundreds recently.
Ramdass, who played a solitary Test and One-Day for the Caribbean side, is representing Islanders Cricket Club for the third successful year.
The stocky right-hander Ramdass, who recovered from a knee and shoulder injury, is also anxious to wear the maroon colours again. He related that in an effort to return to the highest level, he is playing as much cricket as possible to get himself physically and mentally equipped.
Ramdass was delighted with his elevation for an Ontario Select XI to play against a touring Bermuda side. He was outstanding scoring a fluent 75 in a winning effort.
Both the Premier and Elite Leagues will finish in late September.
