Guyanese businesswomen participate in women’s forum in U.S.

United States Ambassador to Guyana D Brent Hardt met two Guyanese women entrepreneurs on Tuesday who recently participated in the Caribbean Women Entrepreneurship Forum in the United States.

Ambassador Hardt emphasised that the forum reflected the U. S. commitment to strengthen entrepreneurship among women, and create new opportunities for women to participate more fully in the global economy. The Guyanese participants: Lucia Loretta Desir and Barbara Dublin-Peterkin, shared their experiences and discussed how they hope to apply the insights gained from the forum to empower more women entrepreneurs in Guyana.

According to a U. S. embassy release, the forum sponsored by the U. S. Department of State, took place in Washington DC from March 11 to 13, 2012. All 20 participants were Caribbean women entrepreneurs who own and manage small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and are committed to growing their businesses, and contribute their on-the-ground experience and expertise to serve as mentors to other women who want to start a business.

The forum gave Desir and Dublin-Peterkin the opportunity to develop a network of women entrepreneurs throughout the Caribbean, who are committed to growing their businesses at the SME level, and are willing to share best practices for building and sustaining successful businesses in the Caribbean.

Lucia Desir is the managing director of D & J Shipping Service, and has been working there for the past 11 years. Barbara Dublin-Peterkin is the chief executive officer of B’s Beauty & Naturopathic Centre and Visions of Excellence Personal Development Centre.

She also owns and manages B & D Farming Complex and Health Resort. The U. S. embassy seeks to empower women through international exchanges such as the Caribbean Women Entrepreneurship Forum. Ambassador Hardt also emphasised that when women prosper, it does not just benefit them; it lifts up their families.
