Guyanese boxers return after successful CBC

After capturing three gold medals and a silver medal in St Lucia at the Caribbean Developmental Boxing Championships (CBC) over the last weekend, Guyana’s quartet of boxers returned home on Monday night with their symbols of hard work.

The quartet did Guyana proud as was expected with Bantamweight Keevin Allicock securing gold along with Middleweight Desmond Amsterdam and Colin “Superman” Lewis while Joel “Stone” Williamson missed out on gold but managed silver.
Upon his return, Commonwealth Youth Games silver medalist Keevin Allicock exuded confidence. “First of all I want to thank God for me coming out victorious, it was a wonderful experience going to the championships. I saw a lot of great fighters, a lot of different styles, it was a wonderful experience,” Allicock revealed.
The Commonwealth Youth Games silver medalist also pointed out that prior to his final bout with Bajan opponent Ajayi Jones; he studied his fighting style.
“I never fought him before, I studied some of his moves, saw him training but I kept praying because I never fight with fear, I have God with me at all times. I was confident ahead of the fight, I knew I would medal because that’s what I trained for.”
The tenacious young boxer also revealed that had Guyana been able to send more boxers, they would have been able to retain the CBC title.
“Not to boast but our (Guyana’s) level of boxing is superior to the rest of the Caribbean, if we had more boxers there (in St Lucia) we would have won more gold medals.”
Meanwhile, CBC Middleweight gold medalist Desmond Amsterdam who retained his title maintained that he was very proud of his achievement.
Team Grenada was crowned champions after dominating the championships with 18 medals en route to their maiden title.
Following the Spice island were Barbados in second, defending champions Guyana in third and hosts St Lucia fourth.
