Kollis Smith, Kiefer Bacchus, Patricia Anthony, Tenesha Lesflores and Denbre McGarrell were selected as the awardees for this programme. The parents of these talented youngsters are employed with the Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc (BCGI).

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) release, the head of RUSAL said that this initiative is a contribution from RUSAL, a Russian company which formed the joint venture Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc (BCGI) in 2004, and is a further step to improving the Russian-Guyanese bilateral relations.

The list of Russian universities that are authorised to accept foreign students and provide state scholarships was forwarded to the Public Service Ministry on August 15th. With the scholarships being tenable for five years, RUSAL takes upon itself the responsibility to fully sponsor these students.

This is inclusive of air fares to and from Moscow, Russia; tuition fees; monthly stipend; accommodation; and allowances for furniture and clothing. The students will have the advantage of benefiting from a monitoring body established by RUSAL, which will provide additional assistance if needed.

The students will also visit various aluminum plants, and engage in the company’s holidays and cultural events as members of the RUSAL family. On completion of their studies, these qualified young people will gain employment with BCGI.
