Guyana’s film industry has potential

Dear Editor,

Permit me space in your newspaper to comment on Guyana’s much- anticipated film industry. Drama is something I am very passionate about, and it is something Guyanese are excellent at. Guyana has seen an abundance of talent of all sorts over the years. For example, we have witnessed the brilliance of the likes of Ron Robinson, Andre Subryan, Rudy Pattedeo, Henry Rodney, and so on. But our actors have been limited to just on-stage performances.

It certainly is time that we give serious consideration to reviving the film industry and work to produce high-quality films. Making films has been a dream for decades, and now it is about to become a reality. We constantly visit the National Cultural Centre and the Theatre Guild to observe various forms of drama. And on most occasions we come out feeling relaxed and happy, because we would have had a good laugh. Drama could be a good remedy for stress, especially if it is in the form of comedy.

Editor, a film industry would be a blessing and a major boost to our country. I believe Guyana’s film industry has the potential to become a leader in our entertainment industry. It would benefit our country economically and as well showcase Guyana’s identity to the rest of the world through films.

I am happy that the Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry; the United States Agency for International Development (USAID); the Universities of Guyana and Ohio; the Theatre Guild of Guyana, and several other private organisations are chipping in to revive the industry.

Guyanese are anxiously awaiting the day when they can watch local talent in form of film. We have the potential, so let us go for it.

Yours sincerely,

Naressa Mohabir
