Guyana will continue to support CDB – finance minister

Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, on Wednesday, May 5th, formally welcomed to Guyana the newly- installed President of the Caribbean Development Bank, Dr William Warren Smith. This formality was performed at the Finance Ministry.

Minister Singh took the opportunity to congratulate the new president on his assuming the highest office within the bank, and he reassured Dr Smith of Guyana’s continued support for the CDB. Minister Singh also used President Smith’s visit to highlight the progress made by Guyana over the years in strengthening the domestic economy and in investing in economic and social infrastructure, which the bank has supported. He shared with the CDB president the government’s vision for the future, and highlighted some of the recent developments which have taken place that have contributed to transforming the economic and social landscape in Guyana. High on the agenda was the development challenges that have impacted on Guyana’s economy, including our vulnerability to natural disasters and climate change.

He also expressed government’s appreciation of the support provided to Guyana by the CDB over the years. The CDB has funded several significant programmes in Guyana, including the US$7.5 million Technical and Vocational Education Training Project, the US$16.4 million Community Roads Improvement Project, the US$13.58 million Community Service and Enhancement Project, the US$28.23 million Skeldon Sugar Modernisation Project, a US$13.5 million BNTF5 programme, and, more recently, the US$6.7 million BNTF6 programme.

Dr Smith officially assumed office as the fifth president of the bank on May 1, 2011. He succeeded Guyanese Dr Compton Bourne, the current chancellor of the University of Guyana, who officially demitted office on April 30, 2011
