Guyana welcomes nomination of U.S. envoy

Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett says that Guyana is very happy that the U.S. has nominated an ambassador to Guyana. She disclosed that, whenever he arrives, Guyana will happily receive him.

Speaking with Guyana Times International, the foreign affairs minister stated that this is a welcome announcement, since it has been some time since Guyana has had a U.S. ambassador. “This will only auger well for the relationship between the United States and Guyana; and we look forward to having him here,” she said.

Officials from the U.S. embassy here have confirmed that the newly-nominated ambassador to Guyana will hopefully arrive within the next few weeks, once the nomination is approved by the U.S. Senate.

Officials have confirmed that they are very excited that this nomination has finally been made; nevertheless, it is unsure as to how long Congress will take to give approval. However, at the moment, Congress has its hands filled with issues regarding the U.S. budget, which threatens a shutdown of the federal government due to a current deadlock on budget spending cuts.

Moreover, the decision of Congress to appoint an ambassador following a nomination by the U.S. President can take up to several weeks.

Guyana has been without a U.S. ambassador since 2009, after Ambassador John Melvin Jones retired from that post. Former Chargé d’affaires of the U.S. embassy here, Karen Williams, had previously said there is no underlying reason for the failure to appoint a new ambassador to any country, but it is usually a lengthy process.
