Guyana soon to introduce ticketing system for litterbugs

The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry is awaiting the judiciary’s decision on the implementation of a ticketing system, which will see penalties applied to litterbugs. Regulations have already been drafted for the implementation of the system, and the ministry is in discussions with the judiciary for the realisation of the penalty aspect of the programme.

When consultations with the judiciary are completed, the ministry will be moving speedily to implement and enforce the new regulations that would allow for the prosecution of persons guilty of improper waste disposal. There are also discussions to have additional stakeholders support the campaign, especially at the political level.
Citizens must be responsible
Government, through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), will be intensifying efforts to increase monitoring and enforcement of individuals and businesses who engage in unlawful disposal of waste.
The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry will continue to engage the Local Government and Regional Development Ministry and the Mayor and City Council to collaborate to keep Guyana clean.
The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry’s “Pick It Up Guyana” campaign continues to receive response from a wide cross-section of Guyanese, as more volunteer and community groups, religious and political organisations are coming forward to support the initiative.
Secondary schools, local scout groups, churches, business organisations, and community-based youth groups have all participated in the venture. The campaign has also been expanded to include all regions, as stakeholders collaborate on environmental and community enhancement across Guyana.
