Guyana romp to innings victory

The victorious Guyana team celebrate after trouncing Leeward Islands by an innings and 27 runs on day three of their regional Under-19 match at the National Stadium yesterday

The spin duo of left- arm spinner Gudakesh Motie (4- 57) and leg- spinner Amir Khan (3- 43) spun a web around the Leeward Islands’ batsmen to bowl hosts Guyana to an innings and 27- run win in round one of this year’s regional Under-19 tournament at the National Stadium yesterday. The Guyanese bowlers snapped up the four wickets required for victory an hour and eighteen minutes into the first session to earn themselves 12 points.

Scores in the match: Leeward Islands 107 and 183, Guyana 317 for 9 declared.

It was truly an uphill task for the Islanders after they entered the final day on 112 for 6, still 98 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat.

Skipper Rahkeem Cornwall resumed from his overnight 34 with Nino Henry and together they played level-headed cricket until Cornwall muscled Motie to the square leg boundary in the day’s seventh over. At that point things looked promising – at least for a fight. The promise did not last as the dangerous Cornwall was removed in Motie’s next over, caught and bowled for 49 (6×4, 1×6, 53 balls, 84 minutes) at 131-7.

His place was taken by Dymon Parris, who was immediately dispatched to the dressing room by Khan’s goggly to leave the tourists at 142-8.

Were it not for a ninth wicket partnership of 41 between Nino Henry, 33, (3×4, 1×6, 74 balls) and Wasim Mentos, 21 not out, (2×4), the match would have ended long before it finally did.

Motie trapped Henry leg before at 183-9 and the last wicket fell at 11.18am, bringing to an end a first round game in which the contest was somewhat uneven.

The Leeward Islands added 71 runs from 24 overs bowled yesterday.

Ronsford Beaton took 1-23, Anthony Adams 1-41 and Jeomal LaFleur 1-6.

Amir Khan finished the match with figures of 6-82 from 28 overs.
