The 2011 Banks DIH-sponsored Guyana Open Golf Tournament which is slated for October 22 and 23 at the Lusignan Golf Course was launched yesterday.
Over 200 players from Canada, U.S.A., Suriname, French Guiana, Trinidad and Tobago and host country Guyana are expected to participate in the tournament.
According to president of the Lusignan Golf Course, Brian Hackett, the tournament is getting bigger each year.
He added that a number of long hitting and exceptional golfers would be gracing the tournament, making for much excitement. Some of the established golfers who would be on show are Jaipaul Suknandan and Seepaul Suknandan from Canada, Anwar Saffee from the U.S. A. along with Avenash Persaud (the men’s defending champion) and Christine Sukhram (the women’s defending champion), both from Guyana.
Roger Rajkumar, a U.S. – based Guyanese, said it was with great pride that he and his group were taking part in the tournament. He reiterated that they have been coming to Guyana for the tournament for the past 10 years and was pleased to see that the tournament is getting better each year. However, he expressed his concerns about the limited size of the Lusignan Golf Course.
Rajkumar pleaded with the government and the public to place more focus on golf, claiming that it is the fastest growing sport on the planet and contributes the most to charity. He stressed that Guyana is missing the opportunity to capitalise on the sport.
