Guyana observes birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

The Indian High Commission of Guyana on Sunday, October 2 hosted an event to celebrate the 142nd birth anniversary of Indian freedom fighter and icon of peace, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who was born on October 2, 1869. The simple ceremony held at the Promenade Gardens was attended by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green, and members of the diplomatic corps.

The event coincide with International Day of Non-Violence. Indian High Commissioner to Guyana, Subit Kumar Mandal, said the event was not a coincidence, as Ghandi preached non-violence.

Mandal also reflected on the life and work of that great leader who touched the lives of many the world over with his teachings of peace love, unity and non-violence.

The high commissioner opined that the message of Ghandi will not remain in the wilderness, but will continue “to show us the way forward to a more civilised world”. Prime Minister Hinds said it was an auspicious occasion to have Ghandi’s birth anniversary celebrated on International Day of Non-Violence. He explained that the occasion provides the opportunity for the international community to reflect on the life of Gandhi, and to remember his message of peace and harmony for all mankind.

Ghandi’s fight against oppression and human degradation earned him worldwide recognition. “His teaching has been a source of inspiration and strength to all; and more importantly, political movements around the world in their fight for freedom and self-determination”, the prime minister added.

He said the government of Guyana remains committed to ensuring equal rights and benefits to all Guyanese, regardless of race, colour or creed.

“Our own country had emerged from a difficult colonial past which brought together people from various parts of the world to Guyana; which makes Guyana so unique with its diverse cultures,” the prime minister noted.
