Guyana is getting the recognition it deserves

Dear Editor,

It seems as if our country is being given the much-needed publicity in order for it to be well known across the world as a top notch tourist destination. For this year, Guyana has been featured in regional and international publications such as Caribbean Beat, Perceptive Travel online magazine (Humble in the Jungle – Exploring Guyana’s Rainforest) by Laurie Gough; “Kaieteur – Guyana is the New Amazon” in UK Stylist Magazine: 2011 Hottest Destinations; the Scotsman Travel by John Gimlette; and CNN article “Adventures of the female Indiana Jones.”

Also, the Travel Channel aired an episode on Guyana, called “The Wild Within – Guyana”, as part of their TV series in early 2011. I was visiting New York at the time and was with some friends when this programme was being aired on one of the channels there, and I must admit they were all impressed with what they saw, since most of them never returned to Guyana after they left.

Also, the country has been featured in an article entitled “50 tours of a lifetime” in the National Geographic’s Traveller magazine. The focus of the piece on Guyana was the 16-day trip offered by Wilderness Explorers, which introduces visitors to “the rich culture and pristine environment of Guyana” in places like Surama, Rewa, Nappi, and Yupukari in the Rupununi. It should also be mentioned that in that edition of National Geographic’s Traveller magazine 2011, Surama village Eco-Lodge was listed among the “Best Hotels in South America”

This is certainly an indication of our growing tourism industry, and speaks to the magnitude of what our country has to offer.

Editor, most other countries have invested millions in marketing and public relations before their tourism sector really took off, and I am very happy that we are getting this kind of publicity for free. I am convinced that it is a matter of time before we begin to see the returns of such exposure on the international stage.

Guyana is currently in the spotlight, and persons are talking about us all over as a country that has something unique to offer. It is now up to us, that is, every sector involved in the tourism business, to step up to the task and give our visitors what they deserve.

Sincerely,

M Harripersaud
