Guyana Day Incorporated – the organization that seeks to unite Guyanese in the U.S. through culture, will host its annual event to celebrate Guyana’s 45th Independence anniversary on May 15th 2011.

Guyana Day is a celebration of the heritage, culture and achievements of the Guyanese people and brings together diverse, multi-disciplinary Guyanese artists of all ages, from all ethnic groups and cultural backgrounds, who present traditional folk expressions and contemporary works.

This year’s event has been co-sponsored by Council Member of the 27th Council District/Deputy Majority Leader of the New York City Council, Leroy Comrie who is expected to present the guest of honour, Guyanese Ken Corsbie, with the Timehri award.

Founder and CEO of the organization, Harry Bissoon told Guyana Times International “we give out this award…to Guyanese who have contributed in the fields of arts and culture and our award is named Timehri award, because Timehri is an Amerindian word which means writings or carvings on rocks and we feel the contribution by our cultural artists…are like writing and carvings on the rock for generations to enjoy and talk about.”

Ken Corsbie is a storyteller, poet, actor and stand-up comedian.

Artists listed to perform at the event include the Mighty Rebel, Romanee Kalicharran, Avirodh Sharma, NYC Bhangra Daance Group and the Verna Walcott’s Impressions and Sandra Primus’s New Revelations Dance Theatres. The celebrations will be at the Performing Arts Center at York College in Queens, New York and there is no charge to be part of this cultural fiesta. The Guyana Day Committee members include Chuck Mohan, Colin Moore, Clyde Reece and Esther Bissoon.
