Guyana cements diplomatic ties with Palestine

Guyana has become the first member of Caricom to establish diplomatic relations with the Palestinian National Authority last week.
Guyanese Ambassador to the United Nations George Talbot, and his Palestinian counterpart, Riyad Manssur, signed a document establishing bilateral relations. In the text, both countries committed to fully complying with the UN Charter and international law and promoting peace and security, as well as respect for the countries’ sovereignty and independence.
Guyana is part of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and has always supported the Palestinian cause.

The two countries have expressed their desire to work to enhance their existing friendly and cooperative relations.
Over the years, the government has been a longstanding and principled supporter of the people of Palestine in their just struggle to realise their inalienable rights to self determination, including the right to an independent state and permanent homeland.  In keeping with this position, the government of Guyana supported Palestine’s bid for Non Member State Observer Status in the UN last November.
In January 2011, Guyana became the first Caricom country to formally recognise Palestine as free, independent and sovereign state based on its1967 borders.
