GUYANA AT THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2010:

Mighty Jaguars tamed!

The Guyana national rugby sevens team, the Mighty Jaguars, were unsuccessful during their campaign in the Group Stage of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, New Delhi yesterday losing all three of their matches. Guyana finished their group in last place after suffering scoreless losses to Scotland, New Zealand and Canada respectively.

In their first game against world number seven ranked Scotland, the Jaguars were crushed 26- 0 after trailing by a try and a conversion ( 7- 0) at halftime.

Lee Jones scored the first try for Scotland, which was converted by Mike Adamson in the sixth minute of the game. Scott Forest scored two minutes into the second half for Scotland, and Adamson converted it once again. Jones scored anoth er pair of tries in the final minutes of the game and Adamson booted the final conversion to make it 26- 0.

Richard Staglon, Dwayne Schroeder, Albert Larose, captain Claudius Butts, Kevin Mckenzie Dominic Lespierre, Theodore Henry.

Christopher Singh, Ronald Mayers and Dane Parks were substituted in the second half for Lespierre, Mckenzie and Henry respectively.

In the second game, world number one New Zealand advantaged the Mighty Jaguars 52- 0. The ‘ Blacks’ scored 26 points each half. New Zealand had beaten Guyana in the International Rugby Board USA Sevens Series 49- 0 earlier this year.

Walter George, Avery Corbin, Lespierre, Singh, Parks, Mckenzie and Henry started the games, while Butts, Mayers and Schroeder checked in for Henry, Mckenzie and Lespeirre in the second half.

In their final match of the Group stage, Canada overpowered the Mighty Jaguars 47- 0. The Maple Leaf nation scored 19 points in the first half and 28 in the second half. In that match George ( who picked up a yellow card), Schroeder, Butts, Lespierre, Mckenzie, Henry and Larose started.

Singh and Mayers were substituted for Henry and Butts in the second half.
