Eight years after she shocked the world and won Guyana’s first- ever Commonwealth Gold medal, Aliann Pompey impressed once again by placing third in the women’s 400m at the 2010 Commonwealth Games at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, India.
The 32- year- old Guyanese Olympian clocked her best time of the season (51.65 seconds) to cop the fi nal spot on the medals’ podium.
Amantle Montsho took the first spot, and broke the 12- year- old Commonwealth Games record (50.17s) held by Jamaican Alexandra Richards with her winning time 50.10s.
Another African athlete, Folashade Abugan of Nigeria, took the second highest level on the podium after clocking her season’s best (51.39s.)
Pompey currently holds Guyana’s national 400m record (50.71s), which she lowered from 50.93s at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin last year. She has represented Guyana at three Olympic Games: Sydney, Athens, and Beijing. Her best performance was in Beijing where she placed fourth in the semi- final, missing the final by one spot. She has also competed in a handful of IAAF Championships, both indoor and outdoor.
Pompey had also captured silver at the Central American and Caribbean Sport Association Games, which were held in Puerto Rico.
Pompey’s bronze caps off Guyana’s participation in the track and field at the event, after sprinters Jeremy Bascom and Adam Harris were eliminated in the first round, while Cleveland Forde placed 18th in the men’s 5000m.
